July 28 Iain and LiamWell, I haven't written much about Iain and Liam's summer vacation so I'll try and catch you all up. Iain has been in England since July 18 and having the time of his life. He's been in Wales at the beach and the fairgrounds picking up girls and breaking hearts and being spoiled rotten by my brother Michele. He doesn't want to come home...well would you? LOL. He comes home on the 8th and I'm looking forward to seeing him. I have missed him although the house has been so quiet without him. Liam has been having the time of his life being the centre of attention for the first time in his life. We've gone to movies, bookstores, gone for walks, just hung out .... he's really enjoyed this time. Tomorrow he leaves for cub camp for a week and Dennis and I will be without children for the first time....practically forever! It will be an interesting week! BOOK 49: The Romanov Prophecy by Steve BerryThis was a good listen. I wasn't thrilled with the narrator (male) attempting to affect a female voice, but the story kept me interested enough that I could ignore that. Miles Lord is in Russia on a research mission as part of the Czarist committee, a committee planning to put a distant heir of the Romanov's on the Russian throne again. Suddenly Miles Lord is on the run for his life, being chased by the Russian Mafia and corrupt Russian cops and he doesn't know why. Along the way, he uncovers the secret...the myth of Alexei and Anastasia's survival is not a myth - they lived - and escaped - and have living direct ancestors who are the true heirs to the Romanov throne. There's also a prophecy about a Raven (Miles is black) and an eagle finding the heirs. The rest of the novel is a quest, Miles and his female companion - a circus performer named Akelina - (who's name translates to eagle. The two of them follow clues across the US to find Nicholas II's grandson living in North Carolina, alive and well - and awaiting the Raven and the Eagle. Now they have to escape the bad guys following them and get back to Russia so he can claim his rightful place. The novel is full of action and lots of violence - I think it one I would not have enjoyed reading, but the audiobook was an entertaining distraction. BOOK 48: Invisible Armies by Jon Evans
Received from Harper Collins Face Book Summer Reading Group. July 23 BOOK 47: The Ladies' Lending Library by Janice Kulyk KeeferI think Shell and I must be in the minority. Most people on the Harper Collins Reading Group loved it. I was given this book by
Shelley and although I didn't struggle with the multitude of
characters and names - I quite liked getting to know everyone - I just
found it so very depressing! No one seems happy, no one seems joyful to
spend time at the beach, even the children are not carefree and their
rivalries seem malicious. The women don't seem thankful for anything
they have - even though some of them do admit they are better off than
most, there's just no gratitude or enjoyment. Even Peter and Nadia's escape is anything but joyful, even though I admire them for trying to break away from the gloom and depression they lived in - I didn't get the sense that they, themselves, were thrilled about it. I did like the descriptions of cottage life, the area, the sea, the sand , the sun and the peek into the Ukrainian culture. July 22 BOOK 46: Absolution by Caro RamsayAnother book I received as part of Harper Collins Reading Group on Facebook. This novel is the first in a planned series and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Ramsay's writing is similar to Val McDermid's and this novel reminded me very much of "A Place of Execution" by McDermid. It's dark, edgy and suspenseful and full of twists and turns. Alan McAlpine worked a case as a police cadet - a young, Dutch, pregnant woman was attacked with acid and a she lay in a coma, McAlpine became attached to her - giving her the name Anna - determined to avenge her attack. He is removed from the case and she commits suicide, leaving behind a baby girl. Later, he finds out that the woman is connected to his brother's recent death. McAlpine moves on with his life and his career. Fast forward 22 years later, and McAlpine is reassigned to Partick division, to a brutal case of women being murdered. The killer is dubbed "The Crucifixion Killer" because of the way the womens' bodies are posed. This case wreaks havoc on McAlpine's career and personal life. He is tormented by memories of the woman from 22 years ago, his brother's death and his own insecurities. As the hunt for the murderer continues and more women die, McAlpine is faced with life and death choices several times - until the climactic finale. July 21 BOOK 45: Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows by J.K. RowlingJust finished reading this tonight, been at it since about 10 this morning. I don't want to write too much right now and accidentally ruin it....but J.K. Rowling is a master at writing and weaving a plot. All my questions were answered. July 20 Harry Potter and The Order of the PhoenixWe went and saw this tonight on the eve of the release of the seventh Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. The special effects were amazing, the adaptation was excellent considering how much I disliked this novel. It is my least favourite novel in the series, mostly because Harry spends so much of his time feeling sorry for himself and angry at the world. However, since having read the book two years ago, I now have a teenage boy and realise this is normal....but it wouldn't have made a good movie. The movie focuses on the training of "Dumbledore's Army". A group of students who decide to band together and train themselves in Defence Against The Dark Arts since their new "Ministry Approved" teacher is only teaching them theory. This movie is darker, more cruel, more heart wrenching and than any of the others so far and the actors are growing up into young adults. Even Neville Longbottom is taller than Harry now and turning into a striking, brave young man. July 19 Facebook Works!!!Tonight I met a friend from High School that I hadn't seen in over 20 years! We were both somewhat shy and loners in school but somehow found each other and were friends and then lost touch in grade 11 when our lives took different directions. A few weeks ago she sent me a message on Facebook and we've exchanged a few messages and tonight went and had a bite to eat. What a wonderful time I had, laughing and chatting about people we knew, our lives now, our lives in between, the good and the bad. She's not had an easy time of it, but her sense of humour, her strength of character and her cheeriness are still there and reminded me so much of why I liked her. I certainly hope we will keep in touch this time around. July 18 Quick UpdateIain arrived safe and sound in Birmingham today and was with Michele when I spoke to him this afternoon. He was tired but seemed to be enjoying himself. BOOK 43: Echoes by Nathan P. ButlerThis was a podcast audio book, meaning it was kind of like a radio program, with episodes of about 10 min each. For this reason, when I downloaded it, it is in chapters with breaks that became a little annoying...but the story itself was interesting. It is essentially a murder mystery with some supernatural elements. I liked the characters - Darren Fox is an Atlanta PD detective and is called to the scene of a hotel where a beautiful woman has been murdered. There's no physical evidence at the scene, and because she has ties to Washington, he thinks there must be some kind of government agency involved in her death. The investigation takes him to Washington to delve into Catherine Dempsey's death and her past. What he learns changes his life and his career. As I was listening to the story, I could picture it as a movie, which is a good thing for the author, I guess. I pictured Ashton Kutcher as Darren Fox and the actor from Forrest Gump who played Bubba - as his partner - Elijah Dawes. I pictured Kevin Costner as the NSA agent. I won't say anymore about the novel to avoid spoilers, but it was worth the listen and it has a sequel that I will be looking for as well. BOOK 42: Harry Potter and The Half Blood PrinceI got this read just in time for the 7th book to come out this weekend, which I will buy.....and hopefully read in the coming days before all the media hype ruins the story for me. But....back to this book. I really enjoyed it. Like all Potter novels, even the gi-nourmous ones - the story flows quickly with alot of action and character development. Hermione seems to be growing up, she's more mature, less quick to judge and less quick to jump in feet first. Harry is becoming stronger and more secure in himself, i.e. standing up to Draco Malfoy. The story itself is wonderful even though there is no confrontation directly with Voldemort, there is still the classic battle of good and evil with surprises of who is on which side. No spoilers from me! There are some sad moments and I admit to a few tears at the loss of a beloved character and wondering if its for real or Rowling will bring back this character, like in a soap opera or movie sequel. Part of me would like to think that she is not that commercial but another part mourns the loss of this wonderful character and wants them back! Just an update...Nothing new to write, just been busy with work and trying to read. I've been sleeping alot lately - I think the thyroid meds are off - but I have also been trying to walk more while we have some cooler weather. Tomorrow is a meetup at the Muddy Duck with Bill, Shelley and some other bookcrossers - it should be a nice brunch. Iain leaves for England on Tuesday so we need to pack tomorrow so he will be all set. |
