    It's been a busy week..

For no particular reason...just seems to be hectic and full of stuff to do. I brought work home tonight, which I haven't done since before I went off last year. It was ok, tedious work but it had to be done and I feel better now it has been.

I've been to Aquafit twice since Saturday! Yay me!  I rejoined the Y the other night and I'm hoping to get back into Aquafit like I did before. I really did enjoy it very much and it's easy on my knees.  Not much else to write right now, so I'll say goodnight!

BOOK 73: Blue Shoes and Happiness by Alexander McCall Smith

Another installment in Mma Ramotswe’s life.  She is now married to J.L.B. Maketoni and the detective business and garage are both doing well.  Mma Ramotswe is called up on to look into various cases, a greedy doctor, a thieving cook and an unethical advice columnist.  She contemplates going on a diet as many around her are making comments about her being a lady of “traditional size”, however she succumbs to donuts and good food in the end.  Although these novels are simplistic, McCall Smith’s love of Africa – for the country, the people, the customs, the food and the traditions – comes through loud and clear.  They are also an insightful look into human nature and in some ways remind me of Miss Marple and how she always could draw parallels to any situation by comparing it to something that happened in her small village of St. Mary Mead.

It also reminds us to rejoice and be grateful in the simple things of life that make us happy..like new blue shoes :) works for me.

    Funny Coincidences

The last three books I've read are connected in a type of string of coincidences....if you believe in coincidences that is.

The Italian Secretary involves a murder centered around Mary Queen of Scots
Bell, Book and Murder contains a novella that suggests that Mary Queen of Scots was a Wiccan.  One of the Wiccans in this novel is named Trimesgestus.
The Geographer's Library has a minor character called Trimesgestus.

    Wierd huh?

BOOK 72: The Geographer's Library by Jon Fasman

I could not put this down once I started reading. It starts out simply enough; the death of a college professor who no one seems to know anything about. Paul Tomm is a reporter for a small town paper who starts to dig into the professor's death - not really finding out anything of substance, but lots of small things that seem to add up to more.

Throughout the novel are chapters dedicated to antiquities that are related to alchemy; the act of transforming one thing into another. They are snippets of world history from all over the globe, snippets of archeaology and folklore that enhance and deepen the mystery.

When the end is revealed and the pieces all click - it is breathtaking and I just closed the book and sat and thought.

BOOK 71: Bell, Book and Murder: The Bast Novels by Rosemary Edghill

I finished reading it last night but wanted a few hours to let my thoughts about it digest before I wrote about it. On the surface, it seems like a light hearted cozy mystery series. But Bast - a NeoPagan Wiccan - is anything but lighthearted. Her character is complex and rich...surprisingly refreshing for this genre.

Edghill brings so many elements to these three novellas - spirituality, good and evil, ethics, prejudice and persecution - to name some of the weightier issues. Bast is confident in her Craft, confident in herself and her beliefs, but these are testing throughout all the novellas while she has to analyze evil and murder to discover who she can trust and who is a "witch wannabe".

BOOK 70: The Italian Secretary by Caleb Carr

This is touted as a "further adventure of Sherlock Holmes". It's very true to the style, both in characterization and in dialogue and flow of story.  I did enjoy it, but I think only because I am huge fan of Sherlock Holmes...if I wasn't , I think would have found this novel stodgy and slow moving.

The plot revolves around a ghost in a castle in Scotland that has been there since the days of Mary, Queen of Scots.  David Rizzio was one of her entourage and was brutally murdered, since that time he has haunted the castle's west tower.  Holmes and Watson are called there by Mycroft to investigate threats upon the current queen's (Victoria's) life.

Using his magnificent powers of deductions and Watson as his foil, the two uncover an entirely different plot that has more to do with greed than treason.

    Phew..hard work.

I'm just taking a break from a much needed sort out in our bedroom.  I've gone through every piece of clothing I own and have about 3 bags worth of stuff to go to Goodwill. Stuff I haven't work in a year and stuff I don't even like! Then I've got about 30 books to go to Recycled Reading and another box that are bookcrossing books that need to move on- I will take some to a meet up next week and then try and take some to Second Cup today to go on the bookshelves there.  The dust behind the bookshelf must have been an inch think....ugh.

Anyway, although it was/is a lot of work - I need to put the bedroom back together now - it really does look alot better and it is very liberating to get rid of stuff that is just sitting around.

Den and the boys are at Games Workshop and should be back soon then I can get them to take out the garbage and take the bags to Goodwill and help me carry the laundry downstairs so that can be my next big project - laundry....oh lucky me.

Well my coffee is just about done, so I guess I'll head back to the war room ;)

BOOK 69: Solos by Kitty Florey

The back cover of this book made it sound like a cozy mystery, but it is more a relationship between an older woman and a younger man who have several similar quirks - both are animal lovers, both are loners, both are word lovers and think in palindromes, puns , anagrams and word games.

Emily Lime (her name is a palindrome!) is a single thirty something struggling photographer in New York and her dog walker Marcus is a 21 year old, lonely young man who drifts through life with seemingly no purpose.  More than their quirks in common, Emily's ex husband (Tab Hartwell) is Marcus' father...but neither will admit that the other knows this to the other.

When Tab offers Marcus 100 thousand dollars to kill Emily, Marcus is outraged and determined to find out why Emily is so valuable to his  father dead...

The rest of  the story is Marcus' search for the truth and the relationship between Marcus, Emily and their motley crew of animal and Trollope loving friends.

It was a fun, light read, just not what I was expecting.

BOOK 68: Keeper of the Keys by Perri O'Shaughnessy

I know I've read other books by this author before, but I never knew that this "author" was actually two people and now that I do, it kind  of makes sense why the novel is sometimes seems to have two different voices.

I am not sure if I liked this or not, it was not really suspenseful or thrilling and the ending seemed very lame and contrived, although all the "loose ends" were tied up...it seemed like it was meant to be two separate novels thrown together at the last minute...the blurb on the back of the book makes it sound much more interesting.

The story of the mystery with Ray's mother would have made a good stand alone psychological thriller, but throw in the disappearance of Ray's wife and the reappearance of her ex-best friend and it all gets a little convoluted, not to mention the other seemingly extraneous story lines....

    New Baby: Mieka Parrillo

My brother, Michele and his girlfriend, Debbie had their second daughter today.

Mieka Parrillo is 4lbs 15oz (just like her big sister Delicia) and Mom and baby are wonderfully healthy and happy.

    Pictures to follow!

BOOK 67: Babes in the Woods by Ruth Rendell

Another Wexford mystery. I’ve read about 5-6 of the Wexford mystery not in any particular order, but I think I actually like Wexford in this one. He’s older, more compassionate and a little less condescending.  When two teenagers and their “sitter”  (Joanna) go missing, their histrionic mother is sure they have drowned in the raising flood waters, but Wexford isn’t so sure and when their bodies don’t turn up, the search continues.

With every day that goes by, Wexford knows the likelihood of them all being alive and safe is less and less. When the sitter turns up dead in her car on a remote estate, the search for the children heats up.

The novel is incredibly suspenseful and just a little predictable as the author litters the pages with clues about the real reason for Joanna’s death and her involvement in the children’s disappearance.

    BookCrossing Christmas Ornament Exchange 2007

    BookCrossing Christmas Ornament Exchange 2007

For the bookcrossers who read this blog....go check out the post and if you're not a bookcrosser...go and become one!!!

    Catch up again....

I haven't written a real entry in a while and I am not sure why, except that I have been busy with the kids and summer and trying to keep this house and my life organized....do I hear you laughing....or is that me?

Anyway...first things first...I did the Dr. Joshi Detox for 21 days and lost 9 lbs in that time, which is quite good and made me happy. I'm still sticking with quite a few things - very limited caffeine, I think I've had one or two glasses of diet pepsi - but no coffee or artifical sweetener otherwise.  I am eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and less processed foods, we've been going to a Farmer's Market every Sat morning to get local grown produce which really does taste better.  I'm drinking about 3 L of water a day and my skin and hair really do look better. I am sleeping better as well.

I'm still doing WW with Lisa and Shell and tomorrow at work they are starting a "The Biggest Loser" challenge with weigh ins, lunch time exercise breaks and nutrition advice. Wanda and I are going to do it together and support each other as well.

Overall since starting this at the end of April I've lost 15.4 lbs and my old clothes are starting to fit again which amazing.

Lisa and Shelley and Wanda have been huge cheerleaders and support for me, I wouldn't have been able to get this far without them.

Speaking of Lisa, she and Greg are engaged and we went and looked at wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses last week. Lisa was beautiful in all the dresses she tried, but I think she has narrowed it down to 3. We'll go back in January and she will probably make her final selection. There are no real wedding plans yet except that it will be at the end of April; I am the Maid of Honour and Louisa and her friend Judy are the bridesmaids.  Iain and Liam will probably be ushers.

The boys are back in school...and although its only been one week we've returned to some semblance of normalcy and routine.

BOOK 66: Poe's Shadow by Matthew Pearl

My favourite type of novel: take an historical fact and fictionalise into a mystery.

Matthew Pearl has taken the mystery of the death of Edgar Allen Poe's last days and resulting death and created a period novel that is full of details and interesting characters.

Quentin Clark, a young, rich lawyer - is enamoured of Poe's work and has exchanged correspondence with him when he accidentally stumbles across the author's funeral. Clark is devastated by the lack of fanfare and seemingly uncaring attitude about this great man's death and takes it upon himself to discover "the truth".

His quest takes him to Paris and then back to Baltimore (his home and Poe's resting place). He becomes manic and decides his only hope is to find the real life basis for Poe's famous fictional detective C. Auguste Dupin and bring him back to the US to sleuth out the details of Poe's demise.  Once he has found "Dupin", together they scour the streets and people of Baltimore to find clues and present the truth.

During their investigation, a Dupin pretender arrives on the scene determined to usurp Quentin and his partner and claim the glory for himself.  In doing so, he muddies the investigation by planting false stories and leads.

So what did happen to Poe in his last days? Do Quentin and Dupin discover the truth?

Not telling :) Read the book.

BOOK 65: Derik's Bane by Mary Janice Davidson

Derik is a werewolf on the hunt for the reincarnation of Morgan LeFey.
Yes....I know its fluffy and silly...but it was fun.

BOOK 64: Dante's Equation by Jane Jensen

At first this seemed like a conspiracy theory novel a la The Da Vinci Code but it is so much more.  There are four main characters, whose lives intersect, all on the same quest for different reasons.

A scientist, Jill Tallcott finds the secret of wave mechanics and discovers how it can affect matter and life on Earth.

A rabbi, Aharon Handalman, finds Jill's name in the Torah Code along with words that refer to a weapon of mass destruction.

Calder Farris is Special Ops and is on the trail to find the secret of wave mechanics so he can hand it over to the US government to make "the" weapon and advance his military career.

Denton Wylie is a rich tabloid writer, who writes for fun and stumbles across pieces of a lost manuscript written by a Nazi Prisoner of War that refers to a secret.

These four chase each other across the globe and end up at the abandoned site of Auschwitz where their individual adventures begin...at this point the novel takes a strange science fiction turn and other worlds and species are introduced.  It's up to Jill Tallcott to figure out how to get them all home.

The underlying premise of the novel is that an individual's heaven is based on how they lived their life.  Kabbalah divides people into categories based on personal character traits and depending on which traits dominated your life will depend on where and how your heaven will look like.

It was very interesting and enjoyable, although at some times disjointed because of the jumping from character to another and from one "place and time" to another.

BOOK 63: The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

I had read this book several years ago but listening to it was a completely different experience.  I enjoyed it so much more. The narrator's voice as well as Mitch Albom's words make this a "story" that is meant to be heard. The silences, the pauses, the background music - this was definitely an experience and not just an audio book.

For those who haven't read it, Albom's vision of heaven is a place that each of us will meet 5 people that our lives intersected with and how those lives and our lives affected each others', either for good or bad. It's not a sugary sweet, religious or spiritual novel, but rather a look at what our reason for living might be.

BOOK 62: Crusader Gold by David Gibbons

This was a fun read. It's an interesting thriller and true to the genre, had very little character development except for the main character, Jack and that was through his thoughts and memories.  I really enjoyed the descriptions of the icebergs and the author has a flair for creating suspenseful scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat.  While on the hunt for Crusader gold, Jack and his crew encounter icebergs, underground caves and secrets, including Nazi war criminals and ancient treasures.

The only part of the novel I really didn't like was Maria's encounter in the cave with one of the war criminals.  It just offended me and made me very angry, as well as not really being out of place in the novel.
